Different species inhabit distinct umwelt, yet are judged within a legal system organized around human norms. When non-human life is deprived of linguistic agency, the law’s claim to legitimacy is called into question.

The world is constructed through the perceptions, choices, and acts of meaning-making of different living beings. Each animal inhabits its own Umwelt. In the human pursuit of meaning and an understanding of what the world is, we have attempted to dismantle animal systems of communication and even tried to make animals understand human language.
